Kylie Icon Award
25 September 2014

Echo Arena Liverpool welcomed Kylie Minogue on the first night of her world tour and marked the 500th event at the venue by presenting her with its Icon Award.

The Australian singer, who kicked off the first of 31 shows in 15 countries in Liverpool, is only the second star to receive the accolade after Sir Paul McCartney scooped the inaugural award in 2011.

Kylie’s Kiss Me Once show also marked the 500th event to take place at the venue since it opened in 2008.

Speaking ahead of last night’s concert when she received the award, she said: “I’m really excited to be starting my world tour in a city with such a famous musical heritage.  I’m thrilled to receive this award from Echo Arena and wish the team many congratulations on the 500th event.”

Bob Prattey, chief executive of ACC Liverpool, home to Echo Arena, BT Convention Centre and from next year Exhibition Centre Liverpool, said: “We are honoured that Kylie chose to come to Echo Arena Liverpool to kick off such a huge world tour and wanted to show our appreciation by presenting her with our Icon Award.

“It also coincides nicely with our 500th event at the arena so is a good opportunity to reflect on our many fantastic highlights over the past six years and look forward to many more to come.”

Echo Arena Liverpool hosts some of the biggest music acts from Beyoncé to George Michael as well as comedy, sporting and family entertainment.  Highlights include the Davis Cup, the MTV Europe Music Awards and the MOBOs 2010 and 2012.  This winter the waterfront venue will host shows such as The Who, John Bishop, Andrea Bocelli and WWE Raw.  It has welcomed 3.5 million visitors since opening.
